Formica Fern at Home … Revisited

Continuing with my ‘revisited’ posts from my previous blog, here is the story of how Miss Fern came to live in our Cosy Nook.  Back in October, mooching around the Flea Market, I spied the lovely four legged friend and fell in love.  Now, nine months later, with a house full of toddler paraphernalia and very little time or energy to devote to vintage pleasures, I read this old blog post and remember those halcyon days of thrifting without the distraction of frustrated little folk tugging me away.  So here is the story of Miss Fern, the Formica Table …

I spotted it, chatted with the seller, encouraged Mr. to admire the table too…
Then somehow, in that special way that we’re all influenced by the unseeing eye of our nearest and dearest, I walked away from the little ferny friend.

Pointing out to my unseeing dear Mr. that this was the teeny tiniest of coffee tables and that it really cost no more than one metre of new fabric and significantly less than a metre of vintage fabric (!) and that the green fronds of fern were just asking to join our very green household, and that it was truly very collectable … and I just simply had to have it …. and …

 Fern meets Beryl

And then I walked very briskly back down the row of stalls, quickly put one hand on the table as the other hand waved my purse in the air.    The seller smiled with delight and commented that the little ferny friend was going to a good home.  I beamed with relief whilst Mr Bun whisked the table back to the car.

Happy.

The rest of the Flea Market was a blur because all I could think about was how I’d just adopted the most lovely of formica topped tables and how I just couldn’t wait to get home, clean it up and play with it.

Fern takes stock of her surrounding and is rather pleased to find Vernon, oil painted dahlias
and a wonky garland as room-mates
Aaaah … if only my lounge still looked this lovely!

And once our frondy friend was clean and the top shining, Mr Bun himself could see how truly “at home” the little table is.

Fern gets Kitschy

Fern is still in pride of place in our lounge for all to admire.  I think she will, in time, fully unfurl her beryl and lime green fronds without the onlooker’s eye being jarred by other less glorious small tables in the room detracting from her slim-legged beauty.

Happy am I.

Miss Fern now resides in our bedroom, alongside my comfy white chair (also in the photo above).  The boisterous antics of the toddlers don’t allow for such lovely items to remain in the lounge!  One of the things that strikes me about this old blog post is the THRILL I used to get from thrifting and finding Vintage Treasures … such jaunts rarely happen now and when I do get the chance to peak at vintage paraphernalia, I’m usually counting the seconds before a tantrum erupts from one of the tinies …. hrmmppfff ………..  but one day – ONE DAY – I will take time to go a-thrifting again and I will revel in the pleasure of treasure finding!

Thank you for stopping by :-)
